This tense is also called ‘past of past.’ It talks about either of the incident that took place in past earlier as-
My friend had reached my home before I got back from the office.
Reaching of the friend at home took place earlier than ‘getting back from the office’ so past perfect has been used in the prior action.
STRUCTURE – 7
Basic Structure : Sub. + had + V III form + Obj. |
Affirmative : Sub. + had + V III form + Obj.
Negative : Sub. + had + not + V III form + Obj.
Interrogative : had + Sub. + V III form + Obj.?
Interrogative Negative : had + Sub. + not + V III form + Obj.?
Passive : Obj. + had + been+ V III form + by + Sub
Important:
This tense is used with connective ‘before.’ Had + V III formis used in the action that took place earlier or first and V II form in the action that took place later.
The dacoits had looted the bank before the manager reached there.
