This tense is used to talk about the continuation of action that started, continued in and ended in past. 

STRUCTURE – 4

Basic Structure      :       Sub. + had + been + Ing form + Obj. + Since/for + time

 

Affirmative                   :    Sub. + had + been + V Ing form + Obj.+ since/for + time

Negative                        :    Sub. + had + not + been +V Ing form + Obj.+ since/for + time

Interrogative                 :    Had + Sub. + been +V Ing form + Obj. + since/for + time?

Interrogative Negative:    Had + Sub. + not + been +V Ing form + Obj. + since/for + time?

Passive                    :  Cannot be converted into passive

Since: for point of time e.g. 4 o’clock, Sunday, Morning, 1947, June etc.

For: for period of time e.g. four hours, three days, few days, some weeks, many years,  a long time, long etc.
